Andy Reid just addressed Rashee Rice concerns in blunt fashion

The Kansas City Chiefs have enough to worry about going into the 2026 season and while Andy Reid is focused on the playoffs, he also has to be concerned with the status of his top wide receiver, Rashee Rice.

Rice is currently in jail after violating his probation stemming from a 2024 car crash last week. Set to miss all of the Chiefs’ offseason program due to a 30-day jail sentence, it left Reid to address the matter during Thursday’s press conference with a straightforward comment.

“As far as Rashee goes, we’re aware of the situation, the league’s aware of it, we’ve talked to the league, we get it,” Reid said during a press conference on Thursday. “As far as any further ado to that, there’s been no talk about anything further. We’re moving forward, just normal as we go here. When he gets back, we’ve got to get him caught up and doing what he needs to do. And then, make sure he gets it. It’s not an easy thing he’s going through. Life lessons are important, but we’re all given chances to learn, and so he’s in that position now.

Rashee Rice may be on his final chance “to learn” with the Chiefs

Chiefs fans may argue that Rice has been in the position to learn many times during his career, but hasn’t taken the opportunity to do so. Rice was involved in a high-speed car crash in March 2024 that led to eight felony counts before being reduced to two third-degree felonies, five years of deferred probation and 30 days in jail as part of a plea agreement.

While the jail time was supposed to be served at some point during the probation, Rice had to serve it immediately after testing positive for THC last week. This is additional punishment to the six-game suspension the NFL handed down to Rice for the start of the 2025 season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, which was another opportunity to learn from his mistakes.

Instead, Rice can’t stay out of the police blotter and it has to bother Reid and the rest of the coaching staff.

Rice caught 70 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns during his rookie season in 2023 and was off to a solid start in 2024 before tearing his ACL in October. After returning from suspension last year, Rice played in eight games and was on pace for 112 catches, 1,213 yards and 10 touchdowns before suffering a concussion.

With that, Rice should be a slam-dunk candidate to be Patrick Mahomes’s top target in 2026. Instead, he’s one of the most complicated players on the roster.

Rice is entering the final year of his contract and while he’s previously stated he wants money close to the four-year, $168.8 million contract Jaxon Smith-Njigba received from the Seattle Seahawks this spring, there’s no way the Chiefs would feel comfortable writing that check given Rice’s past which also includes allegations of assaulting a Dallas photographer in 2024 and a domestic abuse lawsuit filed in February (although the charges in both incidents were later dropped).

Perhaps Reid is hoping that 30 days in jail and a lackluster contract offer (or no offer at all) from the Chiefs may be the message that finally drives the point home. But given his past, it could be more of the same and give Kansas City a lot to think about when he’s done serving his time.
