The Kansas City Chiefs endured one of the more brutal years in recent team history during the 2025 NFL Season, missing the playoffs for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era and suddenly dumping way more questions than answers onto the franchise.

In terms of personnel moves this offseason, the Chiefs put a major emphasis on the defensive side of the ball, using an overwhelming majority of their 2026 NFL Draft capital to bolster Steve Spagnuolo's unit.

On offense, the Chiefs made some key coaching changes, as Eric Bieniemy is back as the offensive coordinator. It's clear that Kansas City believes the main issues on offense were coaching-related, not personnel-related, but wide receiver Rashee Rice, who has been embroiled in off-field issues, is unfortunately again in the news for the wrong reasons.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice violates probation and will serve 30 days in jail

On Tuesday afternoon, news broke that Rice tested positive for marijuana, violating his probation. Rice, according to Matt Foster, is now ordered to serve 30 days in jail, so he'll miss OTAs and mandatory mini-camp:

Last summer, in July, Rice was given a five-year probation ruling stemming from the car crash he was involved in back in March of 2024. In 2025, Rice was suspended for six games, and due to that suspension and concussion symptoms, he appeared in just eight games for Kansas City, catching 53 passes for 571 yards and five touchdowns.

In total, Rice has suited up for just 12 games over the past two seasons in the league. Now 26 years old and already in his fourth year, the off-field issues for Rice continue. It's a shame that this is happening, but given how talented Rice is as a player, it feels extra disappointing that the troubles are continuing.

Still in his mid-20s, Rice obviously has a chance to turn things around and get his off-field and on-field situations in a good spot. Outside of Rice, other key players in the wide receiver room include Xavier Worthy, Tyquan Thornton, and Jalen Royals.

If the Chiefs hope to make 2025 an outlier and return to the top of the AFC hierarchy, they will need Rice and his skillset. The off-field issues keep popping up, making it harder and harder to rely on Rice the player to get and stay on the field for what is turning into a consequential 2026 season for many reasons.
