Stefon Diggs could rescue Chiefs from risky wide receiver bet

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer recently mentioned the Chiefs as possible suitors for Stefon Diggs' services.

The first two months of free agency came and went without a wide receiver addition for the Kansas City Chiefs. The same can be said for the 2026 NFL Draft—with apologies to Cyrus Allen. It's been one of the biggest surprises of the Chiefs' offseason that the wide receiver room has basically gone untouched from one year to the next.

That might be changing, however, since there's still plenty of time for further roster construction.

In a recent mailbag column from Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, the future of veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs was discussed in detail. Diggs, he says, feels likely to return to the New England Patriots if the long-rumored, post-June 1 trade for A.J. Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles falls through. But if that deal goes down, Diggs could head to any number of places.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer recently mentioned the Chiefs as possible suitors for Stefon Diggs' services.

"The Chiefs could make sense," Breer wrote. "The Commanders might, too, since Diggs is from D.C. The Falcons and Rams would also be interesting landing spots." The mention of Kansas City is quite interesting here.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has largely left the position alone in what was otherwise a very, very busy (and pivotal) spring. He selected Allen in the fifth round of the NFL Draft out of Cincy, but other than that, a familiar cast of characters are back to serve as the team's primary pass catchers. Tyquan Thornton returned in free agency with the hopes of greater target share. Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy will serve as the positional pillars with Jalen Royals back after a redshirt season in '25.

That said, Veach has, at least, kicked the tires on further help behind the scenes. Per ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, the Chiefs were among the few teams interested in former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings before he signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings shortly after the 2026 draft. This has to be part of what's fueling Breer's fire on the Diggs discussion.

Diggs played for the Patriots last season and caught 85 passes for 1,013 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns. While he turns 33 this year, he'll be even further removed from a torn ACL in 2024 and it's not as if the Chiefs (or any team) is viewing him as an alpha outside. But for a team with promising question marks all around—Rice's availability, Worthy's development, Thornton's consistency, Travis Kelce's age—adding another layer of security makes a lot of sense.

Speaking of primary options, the Chiefs likely aren't the first call for Diggs. The Patriots sit in that spot after such a strong rebound year in '25 that featured a Super Bowl appearance. Breer referenced his hometown team, the Commanders, and other teams might even serve up a bit more money. But if the Chiefs were already shopping among the best veteran options remaining, it makes sense to believe that Diggs might be in the cards.
