1.30: Kaiir Elam, CB, Florida

The Chiefs have a burning need at the cornerback position. After Chavarius Ward left in free agency, the Chiefs have been trying to move money around to acquire one. Nothing has come of it quite yet, but that could be because they are waiting for the draft.

This year’s draft class has some very talented corners which makes me think this is Veach’s game plan. Additionally, that’s where this mock draft comes into play.

There are a number of very talented cornerbacks, but given their draft position, it’s probably safe to assume that the top three will be gone by pick 29 and 30. However, the Chiefs could still target my fourth-ranked receiver which is Kaiir Elam.

Elam is primarily a man coverage cornerback who generally lines up right at the line of scrimmage. He is a strong and physical receiver, sometimes too much for his own good. By that I mean it’s not uncommon to see him get called for interference when in man, but those things can be taught. His natural ability to play in both man and zone cannot.

Nowadays, you find too many cornerbacks who can play in either man or zone, but not both. It’s becoming more and more common, which is where being able to get a guy who can play in both is good. Elam, if he does get drafted by the Chiefs as he does in this mock, would be a great counterpart to L’Jarius Sneed. I’d love to see what Elam can do in an organization as talented as the Chiefs and I hope we do.
