2.50: Perrion Winfrey, DT, Oklahoma

Perrion Winfrey was one of the best players at the Senior Bowl and although his name held value prior to that, his performance there really rose his draft stock. With that being said, I have the Chiefs selecting Perrion Winfrey in this mock draft.

Winfrey is a fairly athletic defensive tackle, but the thing that really makes him such an undervalued player is his ability to penetrate and get past the offensive line and into the backfield.

Now, I’m not going to act like Winfrey’s an incredibly productive player, because he’s not. He does, however, have a lot of potential. Being primarily a run-stopping player, he is very good at getting into the backfield, and yet he’s also good with play recognition. Using his athleticism to get to different parts of the line and planning for a run to one side or the other, he shows terrific football IQ.

When it comes to what he can do in as a pass rusher, he has shown potential in that aspect, but there is room to improve. This past season Winfrey put up 5.5 sacks for the Sooners defense, which is actually quite respectable, but I know that he could do better. He has the potential to play both roles well, but the thing that entices me is the run-stopping part of his game. The Chiefs have Chris Jones who can get behind the line and create QB pressures, but then they are left hoping that Bolton or Gay can make the stop. But by that point, let’s not forget the running back could be 3-4 yards down the field.

I’m hoping that in this mock draft simulation, and playing out how it would work in my head, the Chiefs would be able to start getting more stops at the line instead of having running backs average three or four yards per carry against us.
