Chad Henne returns to Chiefs on two-year contract
By Matt Conner
Chad Henne will continue to back up Patrick Mahomes on the Kansas City Chiefs depth chart for another two seasons.
Two years after signing Chad Henne to a two-year contract the first time around, the Kansas City Chiefs have decided they’d like to renew their commitment to the veteran quarterback for the same span of time. Per Terez Paylor of Yahoo! Sports, both sides will sign a new two-year deal when free agency begins on Wednesday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed as of press time.
Henne originally signed a two-year deal to be Patrick Mahomes primary backup and veteran mentor during Mahomes’ first two years as a starting quarterback in the NFL. Unfortunately for Henne, he ended up needing ankle surgery heading into the 2019 season, which placed him on the Chiefs injured reserve.
The Chiefs would go on to sign Matt Moore, the very player he was competing against for the backup role back in 2018. After Mahomes suffered a knee injury at midseason, Moore would actually be called upon to start two games for the Chiefs and he performed admirably under center with Mahomes ailing and the Chiefs facing significant NFC North opponents like the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. Moore went 1-1 as a starter.
This coming season, Veach made it clear that he was going to choose again between one or the other and now it’s clear he’s made his decision once again to go with Henne.
Henne, who will turn 35 this summer, first entered the NFL as a second round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2008 and has thrown 58 touchdowns and 63 interceptions in his NFL career. As a starter, his record is 18-35 after several years on some miserable teams in Miami and Jacksonville.
