Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs hosted the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday Night Football in what turned into a rough game to watch. The Chiefs were coming off a close victory against the Detroit Lions and were without a few key players. I didn’t think it was going to cause as much heartburn as it did, but it seemed like no one could get on the same page. The run defense was horrible, the offense couldn’t catch a ball, and the offensive line was a row of human turnstiles.

In the Justin Houston revenge game, he certainly took advantage of the opportunity. Patrick Mahomes looked like he spent more time on the ground than on his feet, which might have been preferred since he re-aggravated his ankle. A bright spot was Byron Pringle. He caught an incredible touchdown from Mahomes, but any celebration of Pringle has been overshadowed by the sloppy results.

The Chiefs also caught the injury bug in this one. Having entered the game without wide receiver Tyreek Hill, defensive end Alex Okafor, and left tackle Eric Fisher, the Chiefs also lost wide receiver Sammy Watkins, linebacker Anthony Hitchens, defensive tackle Xavier Williams, defensive tackle Chris Jones, and left guard Andrew Wylie. In addition, Mahomes tweaked his ankle again. Williams’ injury looks to be the most serious, as he was just placed on injured reserve, but all of these injuries are really starting to pile up. A bye week would be nice.

To deal with the injuries and the poor offensive line play, the Chiefs signed defensive lineman Terrell McClain and offensive lineman Stefen Wisniewski. The Chiefs released Ryan Hunter and, as of press time, have one more move to make.

Next week the Chiefs host the Houston Texans, a team coming off an absolute shellacking of the Atlanta Falcons. Deshaun Watson had a career day. There are a lot of questions that the Chiefs will need to answer this week with a formidable foe coming in. Can the offensive line stop J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus? Can the Chiefs contain a running game led by former teammate Carlos Hyde? Can the secondary stop a white hot Watson? Let’s hope last week’s loss was a wake up call for the team and that they step up to the challenge.

Opening line odds for the Chiefs in Week 6: -4.5.

Game time is 12:00 p.m.
