NFL standings, Week 8: Kansas City Chiefs still stand alone atop the entire AFC

Week 8 is now in the books and the Kansas City Chiefs remain the clear leader atop the AFC West. Let’s take a look at the NFL standings.

Another week has passed in the NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs are still atop the AFC, trailing only the Los Angeles Rams in overal record.

The Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos for the second time this season to improve to 7-1. Meanwhile, the Broncos fell to 3-5. The Oakland Raiders season continues to get worse, as they lost to the Indianapolis Colts and fell to just 1-6, their only win this year coming against the Cleveland Browns. The Los Angeles Chargers had a bye this week.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes had a seventh straight 300+ passing yard game, while also throwing for 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. Wide receiver Sammy Watkins came alive, catching 8 targets for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tight end Travis Kelce had another good game against the Broncos, catching 6 passes for 79 yards and 1 touchdown, his first touchdown since week 4 against the Broncos.

Running back Kareem Hunt had another great game, including catching a shovel pass from Patrick Mahomes and turning it into a play of the year candidate. He finished the day rushing 16 times for 50 yards and catching 5 passes for 36 yards and a touchdown. The day wasn’t all good for the Chiefs, however, with Tyreek Hill suffering a strained groin and Anthony Hitchens suffering bruised ribs. The Chiefs were still able to get an easy 30-23 win over the Broncos in a game where the scoreline made it look much closer than it really was.

Broncos quarterback Case Keenum threw another interception and has now thrown an interception in all eight games he’s started this season. He finished the day completing 23/34 passes for 262 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. With running back Royce Freeman out with an ankle injury, running back Phillip Lindsay took over and rushed 18 times for 95 yards and 1 touchdown. The Broncos were always just out of reach and ended up losing 30-23.

The Raiders season continues to get worse as they came out of their bye week and lost to the Colts. Quarterback Derek Carr had a much better game than last week, completing 21/28 passes for 244 yards and 3 touchdowns. Running back Doug Martin took over on the ground for the injured Marshawn Lynch and rushed 13 times for 72 yards, but lost a costly fumble late in the game. The Raiders ended up losing 42-28.
