Chiefs Kingdom needs to be on the lookout for any potential warning signs of some big extension announcements.

Word on the street is that a couple of big new contracts are set to be signed in Chiefs Kingdom.

Rumors are circulating that contract extensions for both Chris Jones and Patrick Mahomes are in the works, and if that’s the case, it is up to the people of Kansas City to be on the lookout for the breaking news scoop.

It has happened before, and it could happen again.

A contract extension for Jones was one of, if not the biggest item on Kansas City’s offseason to-do list. Jones was dominant in 2022: he was named a first-team All-Pro and finished third in the Defensive Player of the Year voting off the back of the best season of his career that saw him establish himself as the top defensive tackle in the league. An unrestricted free agent at the end of 2023, Jones has publicly stated before that he wants to remain a Chief for life, making it even more appealing to secure his services long-term.

Mahomes, meanwhile, might only be one year into the mega 10-year, half-billion-dollar extension he signed back in 2020, but the idea that a new deal will be coming his way has been gaining momentum. As other quarterbacks have gone on to sign new contracts with annual average values greater than what Mahomes is receiving—like New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones—it seems only logical that the greatest player on Earth will get a new deal soon that rectifies that.

So when will that be coming? And what about a deal for Jones? Maybe they will be announced today, maybe tomorrow, or maybe even weeks from now.

When the deals are finally sorted, history has shown us it could be anyone in Kansas City who knows about the news first. Back in 2020, Katie Camlin was working at Plaza Liquor when Chiefs employees came in to buy six bottles of Dom Perignon champagne.

Thinking that meant something big was on the cards and knowing Mahomes was due for a new contract at the time, Camlin tweeted the news that she thought was about to break, doing so well before any other reports had surfaced. Hours later, the reports were confirmed: the Mahomes deal had been signed.

It was the largest sports contract in the history of sports in North America, and the first word of what was about to happen came from a Chiefs fan in Kansas City.

Now, the same thing could happen again. News of an extension for Jones or Mahomes could drop literally at any moment, and it could be anyone in Kansas City who finds out about it first. Chiefs Kingdom needs to be on the lookout for any potential warning signs of the big announcements.

Maybe a local party store receives an unusually large balloon order with a delivery address for 1 Arrowhead Drive. Maybe people in Chiefs gear are seen at Whataburger picking up a party-sized amount of food. Or maybe someone in red asks for 12 bottles of Dom Perignon at a local liquor store.

There could be any number of signs that big news is about to break in Chiefs Kingdom, and it is up to the people of Kansas City to be ready to spot them.
