The Kansas City Chiefs improved to 7-1 with a win against the visiting Denver Broncos behind another four touchdown game from Patrick Mahomes.

The Kansas City Chiefs have won seven straight games over the Denver Broncos and seven games out of eight to start the 2018 season. They largely have Patrick Mahomes to thank for both marks.

Sunday’s win didn’t begin as normal. The Chiefs, for the first time all year, did not score on their opening drive. The Broncos actually jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in this contest. However, the “slow” start did not stop Mahomes from extending his streak of now seventh straight game with 300-plus yards through the air.

After the two sides traded empty possessions to start the game, the Broncos started the scoring with an eight-play 81-yard drive that ended with running back Phillip Lindsay plowing into the end zone.

After a long 11-play drive for Kansas City, they were stuffed setting up fourth and goal. Down seven, Andy Reid was prepared to go for it until the Chiefs were flagged for a false start. That call brought on Harrison Butker to kick a 24-yard field goal.

After one quarter, the Chiefs trailing 7-3, but they would not trail long. Tight end Travis Kelce hauled in a nine-yard touchdown pass making up for the touchdown he dropped earlier. Wideout Sammy Watkins then broke into the end zone on a thirteen-yard strike in the red zone, which was just the start of his big day. Butker missed the ensuing point after attempt, the first such miss of his career.

As the second half was set to expire, busted coverage resulted in Case Keenum finding Tim Patrick in the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown with just four seconds remaining in the half. That capped off a five-play, 75-yard drive that took place in under a minute.

To start the third quarter, Watkins caught his second touchdown of the day, as Mahomes found him from ten yards out. A nine play, 83-yard drive ended with the Chiefs extending their lead, 23-14.

Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt continues to leave everyone speechless, besides Kevin Harlin who again broke out the “Holy Toledo!” line. Hunt ran in a 23-yard touchdown by hurdling one Broncos defender and carrying another into the end zone.

The Broncos got two scores of their own in the fourth quarter. Jeff Heuerman snagged a touchdown bringing the Broncos within seven. The two-point conversion failed keeping the score at 20-10. Brand McManus then nailed a 36-yard field goal with just under two minutes to play to bring the Broncos within seven.

After a failed onside kick, that was all she wrote. The Kansas City Chiefs survived and stay perfect within the division, and improve to 7-1 overall. Mahomes threw for 303-yards and four touchdowns. He also had an interception on his stat line, his fourth of the year. Hunt totaled 50 rushing yards and tacked on 36 more through the air including his immaculate touchdown.

Watkins led the Chiefs in receiving yards capturing 107 of Mahomes’ 303 yards. Watkins reached paydirt twice and caught eight of his nine targets.

Defensively, the Chiefs racked up five sacks, and six tackles for a loss. Kendall Fuller got his first interception as a Chief with a beautiful diving pick to undercut the route. Dee Ford continued his amazing season sacking Case Keenum three times tonight. Breeland Speaks recovered a fumble, while fellow rookie Dorian O’Daniel had another great game with four tackles and three of them solo tackles, one for a loss.

For the Chiefs, they have an exciting matchup with the Browns next Sunday as Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield square off. For the Broncos, they try to rebound against the red hot Houston Texans.
