The Kansas City Chiefs are one of several teams showing interest in talking to a small school cornerback prospect in Central Arkansas’ Tremon Smith.

The Kansas City Chiefs are doing their homework on a number of late round flyers by using some of their visits on less heralded or known prospects. The latest name to come up on their radar for the 2018 NFL Draft is Tremon Smith, a small-school cornerback from Central Arkansas.

Dane Brugler says that the Chiefs are just one of several teams checking in on Smith’s abilities:

The Chiefs are expected to address the secondary in one way or another much, much earlier than any round Smith might be taken, but Brett Veach, the team’s general manager, is also likely to add a couple key names to the mix, even at cornerback alone.

The Chiefs have already traded away Marcus Peters and then waved goodbye to a number of cornerbacks on the roster in free agency. Phillip Gaines signed with the Buffalo Bills, and Terrance Mitchell signed with the Cleveland Browns. Kenneth Acker is taking free agent visits. Darrelle Revis is likely to sit tight for some time until either returning for another year or retiring outright.

The Chiefs have traded for Kendall Fuller in the Alex Smith trade to the Washington Redskins, and they’ve also signed David Amerson to a one-year deal. But there’s very little long-term talent on the roster, as is, as even for this year, the team’s margins are razor thin. Steven Nelson remains an option for one more year, but after that, the team is reaching for guys like Keith Reaser, Keith Baxter and roster hopefuls like Ashton Lampkin and Jordan Sterns.
