The Buffalo Bills have added some depth to their secondary with the addition of former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Phillip Gaines.

Former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Phillip Gaines has officially found a new home with the Buffalo Bills, signing a new deal on Thursday. Terms of the deal were not made public as of press time.

Gaines was one of five defensive backs for the Chiefs set to hit free agency, a list that included Terrance Mitchell, Kenneth Acker, Gaines, Darrelle Revis and Steven Terrell. Acker recently took his first known free agent visit to the Seattle Seahawks and Mitchell signed a new deal with the Cleveland Browns last week. The Chiefs added another player to the mix when they released Ron Parker, making it six total ex-Chiefs on the market (not to mention Marcus Peters being traded to L.A.).

Gaines entered the NFL as a former third round pick out of Rice in 2014, but he could never quite live up to the draft investment made by former general manager John Dorsey. Gaines would often flash glimpses of such promise and potential, but inconsistency on the field would often find him out of position or simply outplayed by the opposing receiver. Injuries during his second and third seasons also seriously complicated his ability to develop into the starting corner the Chiefs were hoping he’d blossom into.

For the Bills, Gaines is likely a low-cost flyer on a once-promising player who might benefit from a change of scheme and scenery. The Bills have also added Vontae Davis as a free agent to the secondary this offseason.

Gaines had a single interception in four total seasons in Kansas City. Last year he played in 14 games, starting 3 of them, and had 30 total tackles and 3 passes defended.
