The Kansas City Chiefs added a couple veteran longshots to the offseason roster in quarterback Matt McGloin and wide receiver Nelson Spruce.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed two new players to the offseason roster in the form of quarterback Matt McGloin and wide receiver Nelson Spruce.

McGloin will be the familiar name to Chiefs Kingdom given that he served as a quarterback with the Oakland Raiders, the team’s division rival in the AFC West, for the majority of his pro career. McGloin now joins a quarterback stable that includes three players already, including two experienced starters behind first-year starter Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs also signed Chad Henne earlier this offseason.

McGloin has a career record of 1-6 as a starting quarterback and owns a career 58.1% completion rate. He has 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions to his credit, although most of his work came during his rookie season during which he started six games for the Raiders. He’s thrown only 66 passes since the end of the 2013 season and he didn’t even play at all in 2017 as he searched for meaningful work in the NFL.

McGloin’s presence really doesn’t mean much of anything in terms of roster impact or decisions for the future for Brett Veach. If there’s a rookie that he likes in the draft, expect the Chiefs to add another young player at No. 3 to develop over time. That said, there’s no reason to panic in case there’s simply no prospect worth taking at the spots where the Chiefs have selections, since they now do have three quarterbacks in place.

As for Spruce, he starred at the University of Colorado but failed to get drafted in 2016. He spent that year with the L.A. Rams on injured reserve after signing as a UDFA. Last year he latched on with the Bears after being cut by the Rams, but that was also a short stint.

Spruce is a 25-year-old hopeful who broke out during his junior season at Colorado with 106 catches for 1,198 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. He broke the 1,000 yard barrier again during this senior season.
