I will be the first to admit that there isn’t a clear cut franchise quarterback worthy of the first overall pick in this draft class. The quarterbacks in this class all come with some risks, some questions, some shortcomings, and all of them will likely need time to develop before they are handed the keys to an NFL offense.

That doesn’t mean that this class is short on upside. There is a lot to like about the four quarterbacks widely viewed as first round contenders — those being Mitch Trubisky, Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, and Deshone Kizer. There is no clear-cut consensus order that those four are ranked in. Trubisky seems to be the guy that most believe will go first but not to the point where anyone will be shocked if another guy goes before him. This quarterback class really comes down to personal preference and which guy a team believes they can develop and maximize their upside.

I personally really like Trubisky and Mahomes and am not as high on Watson and Kizer. However, I know other people that I really respect that like Watson and/or Kizer. Here’s the deal though, it doesn’t matter what we think. It matters who John Dorsey and Andy Reid like and believe in. I would never trade away the farm to move up and take Deshaun Watson, but if Dorsey and Reid do it I will still be thrilled.

Why? Because I trust in the fact that they are a lot better at identifying what it takes to succeed in Kansas City than I do. We have a general manager that has built one of the deepest rosters in the NFL and is widely respected around the league. We also have a head coach that is seen as an expert at developing and getting the most out of quarterbacks. That should give all Chiefs fans faith in their pick to be Kansas City’s quarterback of the future.

I think it goes without saying that Dorsey and Reid want to win in the worst way. The Chiefs are clearly a team that values building through the draft. That means they value their draft picks. So if those two both sign off on giving multiple high draft picks up to go get a quarterback, you better believe that they have put that guy under the microscope and came away believing he was worth the investment. If those two men will back one of these quarterback prospects that strongly, then there is no way I am not going to be excited about it.

Just to stress this point a little more. I am not a fan of Davis Webb as even a second round prospect in this draft. I think the guy looks like Brock Osweiler 2.0. However, if the Chiefs liked him enough to take him in the first round I would get on board. I trust that Dorsey and Reid are a much better judge of these things than I am and would be excited that they invested in the most important position on the field.

Having said that, it also means that I have to respect their opinion if they decide not to draft a quarterback early in this draft. Will I be supremely disappointed? Yes, but if they did their homework and decided none of these guys are worth it then I have to respect that decision as well. I just really hope that isn’t the case.

Now let’s talk about whether or not the Chiefs can afford to trade multiple picks to go get the quarterback they want.
