If the Kansas City Chiefs were to give up multiple high picks in both this draft and the next in order to go get themselves a quarterback, some of you would freak out about the cost. I get where you are coming from. There are many positions that I would love to see the Chiefs draft besides quarterback. Running back, tight end, defensive line, pass rusher, inside linebacker, and cornerback are all high on my list. That having been said, no team in the NFL is as deep as they would like at every single position—not even the mighty New England Patriots. Teams that are frequently listed amongst the NFL’s top contenders like Green Bay, Pittsburgh, and Seattle all have positions where they need to improve. They still compete every year because they have their franchise quarterback.

The Chiefs may be in a position where they could upgrade several positions, but overall they have a championship caliber roster if they had a big time quarterback. I’ve backed Alex Smith since his arrival in Kansas City. The guy does enough to win games week in and week out, but he is limited. The Chiefs need to be almost perfect everywhere else in order to win a Super Bowl with Alex Smith. His age and contract are getting to the point where they have to start thinking about the future. With Smith slated to be the starter this year but having a hefty price tag in 2018 (most of which will no longer be guaranteed), this is the perfect time to find his successor while still fielding a playoff contender.

Our fearless leader here at Arrowhead Addict, Matt Conner, posted an article on Friday that stated that the Chiefs had the most returning players from their 2016 team still under contract. In other words, the Chiefs division-winning playoff roster is still intact. They could literally start the season without a single other player added and still be a contender. Would that be ideal? No, of course I’d like to see them add some players, but you can’t name me one single position on this roster where the Chiefs would be in huge trouble if they don’t draft a player in this draft.

The defensive line took the biggest hit with the losses of Dontari Poe and now Jaye Howard, but they still have their three starters set with Chris Jones, Bennie Logan, and Allen Bailey.

Cornerback is frequently talked about as a need but they are returning all of their corners from last season. Most of those guys are young players that should only improve.

Derrick Johnson is a question mark with his age and injury status but Ramik Wilson and Justin March have both started and played adequately. They also have a couple more young developing guys in D.J. Alexander and Terrance Smith. Plus, with the Chiefs returning both Eric Berry and Daniel Sorensen whom they used as quasi-linebackers in the sub package that makes the need a little less.

I’d love to see them add a starting caliber running back but they are returning their best running backs from 2016, plus they added C.J. Spiller as a possible reclamation project as well.

I could keep going but you get the idea. The Chiefs have TEN draft picks and a roster that is already solid across the board. They can afford to send multiple picks to a team that is hurting for depth in order to upgrade the key position that could put the Chiefs over the top in the long run. I don’t know if there is another team in the entire NFL in a better position to trade up in this draft for one of these developmental quarterbacks. They have picks to spare, a roster that is already deep, a proven veteran quarterback for the rookie to learn behind and a coach known for developing quarterbacks.

The Chiefs can absolutely afford to move up in this draft and get their man. Period.

I even believe I have the perfect team for them to trade with.
