2. The Defense Played Fairly Well

Oct 5, 2014; Santa Clara, CA, USA; Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Allen Bailey (97) sacks San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) during the third quarter at Levi

Chances are, the above will spark pitchfork-waving comments. But at the end of the day, San Francisco was held to its season average of 22 points.

After the play, the defense had no say in Kaepernick’s fraudulent chain-moving scramble. It wasn’t responsible for deploying 12 men on special teams either. Despite those two unrelated (but related) gaffes that it footed the bill for, a defense without four starters (two Pro Bowlers) held the 49ers to 22 points at home.

Bob Sutton’s group wasn’t superb, but it also wasn’t nearly as awful as some would lead you to believe.
