The Kansas City Chiefs are in need of an outside receiver, and Marvin Harrison Jr.'s time with the Arizona Cardinals was clearly coming to an end — it was a match made in football heaven, at least on the surface.
But when the Cardinals' expected price of a second-round pick and more was revealed, the storybook pairing started to look like an obvious mistake. While the Chiefs passed on the trade, the Houston Texans jumped on it, sending Arizona a 2027 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick in exchange for Harrison and a 2027 seventh-round pick.
At that cost, the Chiefs were right to walk away. Now, they'll need to look elsewhere for pass-catching help.
Chiefs were wise to turn away from Marvin Harrison Jr. trade
Simply put, Harrison hasn't done enough to warrant the price that the Texans paid for him. His 0.6 yards per route run this season ranks 98th among 101 qualifying receivers.
After what was already a disappointing rookie year, he has steadily declined. So far this season, he has just five catches in four games. With effort and consistency issues all over his tape, it was surprising to see the Texans give up so much to get him.
Yes, the Chiefs could have used an "X" receiver like Harrison, but they had no reason to give up a second-round pick to get him.
Chiefs' WR options are dwindling as trade deadline approaches
Harrison wasn't the answer the Chiefs were looking for, but they still need to add another capable receiver. If they're going to use the trade market to find one, they'll have to do so in the next four weeks. The trade deadline of Tuesday, November 10th is rapidly approaching.
The Chiefs could target one of Harrison's draft classmates, Brian Thomas Jr., if they're looking for another talented reclamation project. However, they may be better off shopping in the bargain bin for a player like Calvin Ridley or Jerry Jeudy.
Tyreek Hill is an obvious option, as he's still sitting in free agency after being released by the Miami Dolphins. He'd add some explosiveness to the Chiefs' passing game, even if he isn't the traditional outside receiver they're missing.
Whatever Kansas City does, they'll need to move quickly. With Rashee Rice battling another injury and Xavier Worthy failing to meet expectations, the current state of their receiver room could hold them back from making another deep playoff run.
