John Harbaugh reportedly tried to trade for Chiefs linebacker before free agency

It's certainly no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs have lost a lot of key contributors on the defensive side of the football this offseason.

To kick things off, of course, the Chiefs traded two-time All-Pro Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams, who then also signed Jaylen Watson once free agency began, thus leaving Kansas City without its top two cornerbacks. The secondary took another huge hit when Bryan Cook returned to his hometown to sign with the Cincinnati Bengals, and the loss of linebacker Leo Chenal, who inked a three-year deal with the Washington Commanders, certainly shouldn't be overlooked either.

There was plenty of chatter over the last couple of months that Drue Tranquill could also be among the list of Chiefs defenders looking for a new home, as the 30-year-old was consistently listed as a potential cap casualty.

That never came to pass, of course, as he agreed to restructure his contract, but there was apparently another manner in which Tranquill could have departed, as it's been reported that the New York Giants were interested in acquiring him.

The Giants reportedly inquired about the services of Drue Tranquill

During a recent episode of his Breaking Big Blue podcast, ESPN's Jordan Raanan was discussing New York's linebacker situation and revealed that the Giants, who have themselves a new leader in former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, were hoping to land Tranquill in a trade before free agency began.

"The linebacker the Giants were actually going to trade for, from the Kansas City Chiefs, it seemed to be before the start of free agency, Drue Tranquill," said Raanan. "He ended up staying in Kansas City, taking a pay cut to stay. Seems to be something he wanted to do. He didn't want to leave there."

The thought process seems to be that Tranquill was seen as a replacement for veteran Bobby Okereke, whose release opened up roughly $9 million in cap space for the Giants. It wasn't revealed what New York was willing to give up in return, but that doesn't matter much, as the deal obviously didn't get done.

As mentioned, Tranquill took a pay cut to remain with the Chiefs rather than become a cap casualty, agreeing to restructure the final season of the three-year, $19 million deal he signed back in 2024. Under the new agreement, his $6 million base salary for the 2026 campaign was trimmed to $3.5 million, and he'll receive just under $3 million in guaranteed money.

The former fourth-rounder has certainly been an integral part of Steve Spagnuolo's defense over the past few years. After spending the first four years of his NFL career with the Los Angeles Chargers, Tranquill has racked up 275 total tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 19 QB hits, 8.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and four passes defended in 49 regular-season appearances for the Chiefs over the past three seasons, adding another 46 tackles in the playoffs.
