The Kansas City Chiefs just set the football world on fire with a blockbuster trade days ahead of free agency. Brett Veach made the gutsy decision to send one of his best players packing his bags to Los Angeles in a shocking trade with massive implications.
On Wednesday, ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported that the Chiefs were working on a blockbuster trade that would send All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the LA Rams. Minutes later, Schefter released the full details of the trade.
And the Chiefs just made out like bandits.
In exchange for McDuffie, the Chiefs will receive the Rams' first-round pick in 2026 (No. 29 overall) as well as a fifth- and sixth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Kansas City will also receive a third-round pick in next year's draft.
Parting ways with an All-Pro player during the prime of his NFL career is never an easy decision. But the capital received could quickly pay dividends for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs are in quite a financial bind—this was no secret to the public, and certainly not to NFL opponents. Veach's team is currently nearly $7 million in the salary cap hole, while having an effective cap space of -$14.36 million, per Over The Cap. This was only going to get worse if Kansas City found a way to keep McDuffie around.
The talented cornerback is entering a fifth-year option for the 2026 season at $13.632 million. However, McDuffie will soon fetch a contract that will make him one of the richest cornerbacks in the game.
While Chiefs fans will hate to lose one of their best overall players, they can be thankful the Rams were able to stomach the double gut punch of unloading elite draft capital for a player and turning around to pay him a massive contract (which should be coming soon).
McDuffie has been one of the best in the business at the cornerback position during his first four NFL seasons. However, the Chiefs received as high a compensation as they could have imagined. The 5' 10 3/4'' cornerback recorded just three interceptions in his first 56 starts, while his 75.6 overall grade from PFF ranked 12th among NFL cornerbacks in 2025.
With the draft capital received in the deal, the Kansas City Chiefs can rebuild the foundation of their roster with talented young players on a rookie contract. Losing McDuffie stings, but the Chiefs just set themselves up for success beautifully in the 2026 NFL Draft and the next era in KC.
