The Kansas City Chiefs' secondary continues to suffer considerable losses in the first waves of the offseason. The latest departure comes at the safety position, where the Chiefs' best player, Bryan Cook, has left to join the Cincinnati Bengals in free agency.

According to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, Cook will receive a three-year deal worth over $40 million in potential earnings once the new league year arrives on Wednesday.

In addition to the loss of Cook, the Chiefs have also traded away star cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams. That same team also signed cornerback Jaylen Watson away to a three-year deal in free agency.

Cook joined the Chiefs as a vital second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, a rookie class that completely rebuilt the team's defense on the fly and brought two consecutive championships while chasing a third. Five defensive backs from that class, including Cook, grew into starters or key contributors, while others like Leo Chenal and George Karlaftis made a major impact in the front seven.

Cook was an essential part of that rebuild as the secondary lost three-quarters of its safeties from the previous season in '22. The Chiefs allowed Tyrann Mathieu to leave in free agency for a homecoming with the New Orleans Saints. Daniel Sorensen and Armani Watts also departed. That left Juan Thornhill as the only holdover, and Cook earned meaningful reps during his rookie campaign.

The following offseason, Thornhill signed a three-year deal with the Cleveland Browns, opening a starting role for Cook alongside Justin Reid. From there, Cook became an essential piece of Steve Spagnuolo's puzzle in the secondary as a long-term starter known for his aggressive presence and strong tackling.

Cook blossomed even more in his contract season after Reid's three-year stint was over. For the first time in Spags' tenure as defensive coordinator, the Chiefs decided against bringing in a veteran free-agent signing to anchor the secondary. Cook was handed the mantle, and he displayed greater range in coverage with his best overall season ever.

Reports out of the Combine suggested Cook could command north of $14 million annually on the open market, a number that ultimately made a reunion with the Chiefs difficult, even if the desire to bring him back was genuine. He finishes his Chiefs' tenure with 15 pass deflections, 3 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries, and, most importantly, two championship rings.
