It's hard to ignore people complaining about Cris Collinsworth whenever the Kansas City Chiefs are playing on Sunday Night Football. "He talks about Patrick Mahomes too much!" is usually what people are whining about.
Well, during an appearance on Up & Adams on Tuesday, Collinsworth addressed that crowd and said that he doesn't care about those accusations.
"Honestly, I don't care if anyone thinks I like Patrick Mahomes, because I do. I do like the guy. He's been one of the most phenomenal players we've seen in the league for a long, long time."
Cris Collinsworth doesn't care if people think he likes Patrick Mahomes
What led to this being brought up was Kay Adams discussing how NFL fans might criticize Collinsworth for pointing out how the offensive line was bad in Super Bowl 59 and that's him giving Mahomes an out for his performance. Collinsworth was asked how much of the Super Bowl beatdown was on Mahomes.
"Some. I mean, clearly some," Collinsworth replied. "He was missing some throws as well that were the classic don't throw back across your body, which we've seen him do a thousand times. That's what he did for the pick-six. He did not have a good first half, he just didn't. He not only had to be good, he had to be great and probably couldn't have even been great enough for him to have won this game."
After that is when he went into saying how he doesn't care if people think he likes Mahomes nor should he care. Collinsworth's job is to talk about what he sees while calling these games and people might not like how much he gushes over Mahomes' plays but he's living in the moment and experiencing the game like all of us.
This is the same gripe people have with Tony Romo whenever he's on the call for Buffalo Bills games because they think he goes overboard with the Josh Allen love. The commentators are fans of the game too and if they happen to get a little excited when a big play happens, why is that such a big deal?
Good for Collinsworth for sticking to his guns here.
