The Kansas City Chiefs were torn apart by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, as it became clear from the opening whistle that Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts were on a mission to dominate the game. Not even Patrick Mahomes could withstand the onslaught from one of the best teams in recent NFL history.

Mahomes' 40-22 loss was an impossibly bleak moment for the leader of a team that was trying to become the first franchise in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls. With three turnovers on the ledger and a half-dozen sacks taken, Mahomes' play wasn't as good as his final stat line would suggest, as he trailed 34-0 at one point.

After a night in which Mahomes looked more human than he ever had in his brilliant career, everyone naturally wanted to find out what was going on in No. 15's head.

Everything Patrick Mahomes said after brutal Super Bowl 59 loss to Eagles

Mahomes shouldered the blame for this loss, saying he should know not to make a bad play worse when teams like Philly play shell coverages on third down. Mahomes acknowledged that defenses like Philadelphia's unit will keep improving with time, and he went on to place the loss on his shoulders on social media.

Mahomes also said that he will be motivated for the rest of his career when he thinks about both this loss and his prior Super Bowl loss against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As brutal as this was, Mahomes and the Chiefs will use this as fuel for next year.

As for the Travis Kelce question, Mahomes acknowledged that the Chiefs tight end will need to take some time with his family before deciding on a return for one more year, but added that he would be welcomed back with open arms. Mahomes was also "proud of the fight" this team had.

Mahomes finished the game 21-32 for 257 yards with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He was sacked 6 times, which was due to a combination of the offensive line being overmatched and Mahomes himself holding the ball too long as he tried in vain to make a play for a struggling offense.

The Chiefs will head into this offseason with a good deal of questions and uncertainty surrounding their roster. It is unknown just how much longer Travis Kelce is going to play, the offensive line will need to be reworked, and the front office isn't in a very financially flexible position.

Mahomes' talent and Andy Reid's offensive creativity will likely be enough to keep the Chiefs in the hunt for the championship once again next year, but this game has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that even Mahomes' usual playoff pixie dust has a limit. The Eagles were a far better team, and they flexed their muscles hard.

The worst part about this loss, unlike the past Super Bowl loss to Tampa Bay, was the fact Mahomes didn't even have a ton of cool plays negated by penalties or drops. This was the worst game of his professional career, and he will have to bear that scarlet letter for the rest of his time in the pros.
