Chiefs undrafted rookie corner has surprising opportunity to secure defensive role
The Kansas City Chiefs defense has (again) proved to be a top-tier unit in the NFL this season, ranking fifth in points allowed per game and proving crucial in several victories.
Despite their elite performance so far this year, there's still room for improvement as the November 5 trade deadline approaches. The Chiefs have already made waves by acquiring DeAndre Hopkins from Tennessee last week and Joshua Uche from New England this week.
Following Jaylen Watson's season-ending injury against the 49ers, the cornerback depth has become a concern. Beyond Trent McDuffie, the position group remains largely unproven, potentially prompting another move before the trade deadline.
If the Chiefs stand pat, rookie Christian Roland-Wallace is one of the top options to replace Watson.
Injuries to Jaylen Watson and Nazeeh Johnson have opened doors for lesser experienced competitors
Roland-Wallace, an undrafted free agent from USC, caught the team's attention with impressive preseason play, particularly on special teams. Making the active roster as an undrafted rookie was itself a huge achievement.
After playing only one defensive snap in the first five weeks, Roland-Wallace made the most of his opportunity against the 49ers, logging 15 snaps and nabbing his first NFL interception. His playing time increased to 31 snaps against the Raiders following Watson's injury. Despite giving up a touchdown to DJ Turner, he delivered a solid overall performance.
After losing Nazeeh Johnson, Roland-Wallace held his own for the majority of the game against the Raiders. The Chiefs initially turned to third-year corner Joshua Williams to fill the void, but his Week 8 struggles (including two penalties) might open the door for Roland-Wallace.
Roland-Wallace has exclusively played slot cornerback during both preseason and regular season, contrasting with Watson's outside role. His limited speed profile makes him better suited for the slot.
Kansas City typically prefers to utilize three cornerbacks. The first spot obviously belongs to Trent McDuffie, who can play both inside and out, with the other spots up for grabs. Nazeeh Johnson has struggled and Williams has had his ups and downs, leaving Roland-Wallace another option.
If Roland-Wallace gets the nod, expect him to stay in the slot, with McDuffie outside. While he might occasionally line up outside, the Chiefs seem to have a clear vision for his role.
Being limited to the slot could limit his playing time, particularly in matchups where defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo wants McDuffie inside. However, McDuffie's recent shift to more outside coverage (86% in the last two weeks compared to 59% in the first five games) suggests the Chiefs are adapting to their current roster situation.
While young cornerbacks often experience growing pains, Roland-Wallace has a prime opportunity this Monday night against a depleted Buccaneers receiving corps. With Mike Evans likely out and Chris Godwin sidelined for the season, he'll face a manageable test against Sterling Shepard, Trey Palmer, Jalen McMillan, Ryan Miller, and Rakim Jarrett.
The Chiefs have a fortunate matchup this week as the Buccaneers come to town. Unfortunately, for Tampa Bay, star wide receiver Mike Evans is likely out for this game and wide receiver Chris Godwin is out for the season after a gruesome leg injury.
A strong performance could cement his role moving forward, while struggles might prompt the Chiefs to explore the trade market before the deadline.
Finding an undrafted rookie who can contribute immediately is always a win for NFL teams. If Roland-Wallace can establish himself as a reliable option, the Chiefs may have struck gold once again at cornerback.
