Monday was the first day in pads in Kansas City Chiefs training camp, which is a pivotal moment for the coaches to evaluate the state of the roster and the progress of younger prospects. Head coach Andy Reid said he appreciated the effort of everyone after practice in St. Joseph and spoke with reporters about a number of topics to keep fans updated.
Here's a rundown of what we learned from Reid after a day off for the Chiefs on Sunday.
Chiefs injury update: August 3
A few players sat things out on Monday as everyone else got back to work, but there were no new injuries to report. Wide receivers Cyrus Allen and Xavier Worthy both left practice on Saturday—Allen due to a shin bruise and Worthy for a sprained shoulder. Reid said both were taking things one day at a time as they waited for swelling to go down. He anticipated a return later this week for both players. Ashton Gillotte is also nursing a hamstring strain, and Reid also sounded optimistic about his eventual return as well, although details were not fully disclosed in terms of a specific timeline.
Mia Bieniemy's updated condition
Speaking of uncertain timelines, the Chiefs are still missing offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy in St. Joseph, but that's to be expected after the tragic shooting involving his wife and son. The good news is that Mia Bieniemy's condition is "improving by the day", per Reid, and the Chiefs are focused on what's most important when it comes to any professional expectations.
"Mia’s doing better. She keeps improving by the day, so that’s a positive. There’s no timetable on EB coming back or any of that, so he just needs to take care of business there, and when he gets back here, he gets back here," said Reid.
Reid previously noted that passing game coordinator Joe Bleymaier and offensive line coach Andy Heck will step up in Bieniemy's absence.
Peter Woods is impressing
The Chiefs selected two players in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, and the praise is flowing for both players. Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods bolstered the trenches at the bottom of the first round, and Andy Reid says he "likes what he's seen."
"He’s an explosive kid. He’s learning. He’s smart. He’s learning, trying to hone in on some of these techniques we’re asking him to do. I like his effort. So he’s got a ways to go, but we sure like the tools and the effort and how smart he is. I appreciate that," said Reid.
Chiefs Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith also spoke with reporters and had a glowing report of facing Woods in practice.
"Peter’s really talented, man. Sky’s the limit for him in terms of his hand utilization, speed, power—he’s really sort of the full package type of guy. He’s young and he’s figuring out the game, but he has a willingness to learn. I’ve really enjoyed the way he’s stepped into this program, this organization, and how he’s trying to turn himself into a great player. But definitely has an outstanding future ahead of him. Just really excited to help his development where I can."
Mansoor Delane's status
As for the Chiefs' other first-round pick, LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane, he's been slower to get up to speed as he deals with a lingering shoulder injury. He's doing what he can in both mandatory minicamp and training camp, but he remains in a yellow (non-contact) jersey. Reid continues to emphasize Delane's toughness and said the team's training staff continues to have to hold him back from risking further injury.
"So he’s a tough nut. A lot of guys probably wouldn’t go out there and play with what he’s got, but he wants to be out there; he wants to learn. That’s what he wants to do. But contact… we gotta keep him out of contact. Right now that’s important ’til that thing heals up. Footwork and all that is great. Go do all that, no problem. But you gotta just wait until it’s healed up."
The Chiefs will return to practice on Tuesday at St. Joseph where the team's Ambassadors will be there as well as autograph sessions with offensive and defensive linemen.
