Mansoor Delane's absence from Chiefs drills remains unexplained

The Chiefs' top pick in the 2026 draft is still not practicing with the rest of his teammates during minicamp.

The anticipation of seeing a team's top draft pick for the first time is part of the excitement of mandatory minicamp. For the Kansas City Chiefs, however, such attention has generated the biggest question of all.

As the Chiefs completed the second day of their three-day minicamp on Wednesday, cornerback Mansoor Delane was once again observing drills and practices without wearing a helmet. Yet for the second consecutive day, no immediate answers were heard from those at Arrowhead, leaving fans to wonder what exactly is wrong with Kansas City's first-round pick.

Delane was selected at No. 6 overall in the 2026 draft after general manager Brett Veach decided to trade up from No. 9 overall to secure Delane's services. The LSU cornerback was widely regarded as the best pass defender in this year's class, and after an offseason marked by significant departures in the secondary, it made sense for Veach to target Delane.

Part of the thrill of minicamp coverage for Chiefs Kingdom was to hear how Delane was coming along as a rookie, knowing that the expectations thrust upon him, even from the jump, were going to be high. Instead of hearing reports about his performance, even with the limitations of minicamp, fans are now concerned about availability issues.

Delane's expected role is as the Chiefs' CB1, following the trade of Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams and Jaylen Watson's decision to follow him there in free agency. The Chiefs have some talented players down the depth chart, but the secondary lacked a clear lockdown defender until Delane arrived with the ceiling to replace McDuffie in that regard.

In his lone season at LSU in 2025, Delane was an All-American corner with 11 deflections and 2 interceptions for the Tigers. He previously played three seasons at Virginia Tech before transferring to boost his draft stock. He allowed a meager 31.3 passer rating when targeted, per Pro Football Focus, last year.

Such worries are usually overblown. Delane is present and has been seen even participating in some drills on the side on his own. It's also only June, and the lack of other news during the summer doldrums often turns molehills into mountains. But reporters will undoubtedly ask Andy Reid about Delane's status on Thursday when he addresses the media, which will hopefully clear up the confusion and concerns before the conjecture gets too wild.
