The Kansas City Chiefs lost a major piece of their front office this offseason with the departure of Mike Borgonzi to the Tennessee Titans. And while it should be obvious that the franchise will miss Borgonzi even to outsiders given his longtime importance to the team, it's clear he'll be sorely missed by those who worked alongside him,.
Borgonzi was hired as the Titans general manager after more than a decade-and-a-half with Kansas City, a tenure that dates back beyond current GM Brett Veach and former GM John Dorsey—as far back as the Scott Pioli days in K.C.
The fact that Borgonzi has been around as long as he has is a testament to his acumen and the respect that his peers have for him. The team has purged its leadership during his stint but he's been able to stay in place while rising in the ranks to his former title of assistant general manager. That's a run that also included overseeing the team's personnel departments and helping to oversee scouting.
While speaking to the media from the annual Scouting Combine, Veach spoke glowingly of Borgonzi and said the Titans made the right call with their hire.
"Mike was like a best friend for me," said Veach. He was the first guy I met when I came to Kansas City and we shared an office for years. He was one of those guys that when you go through a transactional period, whether it be free agency or the draft, you’re always going to have big group discussions, small group discussions, discussions with your head coach, and then you’re going to pull a guy to the side to really just share your thoughts and ideas with and he was that guy for me.
"He’s a great guy. I’m really happy for him and his family and I think he’ll do some great things in Tennessee."
Borgonzi now takes the front office reins for a team that won 17 games in the last three seasons after winning 17 with the Chiefs just last year.
