Running Backs

The Chiefs have Isiah Pacheco penciled in as their lead running back next year, but with Jerick McKinnon a free agent and Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s future with the team in question, it would make sense for them to sign someone in free agency.

The Big Names: Zeke Elliott, Leonard Fournette, Kareem Hunt, Devin Singletary, Damien Harris

The Chiefs won’t sign a running back to a hefty deal, so if any of these guys are hoping for a big payday, it won’t come from KC. Elliott and Fournette are similar in that both would fit well in K.C. as second backs with passing down and goal-line upside, but they’d have to accept a small contract and secondary role.

Hunt obviously has a complicated history with the team and who knows if either side would welcome a reunion, but on the field, you could say he’s just as good of a fit as Zeke and Fournette and has more miles left on his tires. Harris and Singletary were both lead backs last season and are still in their prime, but they may also be looking for a bigger role or payday.

Less Expensive Fits For The Chiefs: Jerick McKinnon, JD McKissic, Rex Burkhead, Kenyan Drake, Dontrell Hilliard, Darrel Williams, Darrell Henderson, D’Ernest Johnson

This is the tier of running backs I would expect the Chiefs to grab someone from. Obviously, McKinnon and Williams would already know the offense. McKissic and Burkhead are proven pass-catching backs that could make sense and Reid would likely trust them from day one. Drake and Henderson are both backs that looked like they may become feature backs at one point, but it never materialized. Hilliard and Johnson have both flashed nice upside in limited opportunities.

If They Still Want A Fullback: Derek Watt

The Chiefs lost Michael Burton in free agency. I don’t think they’ll go out and spend money to bring in a proven veteran, but if they did Derek Watt is the best available. He’s also a proven special teamer which Dave Toub would like.

Now it’s on to the all-important wide receivers.
