Mitch Morse helped the Chiefs claim first place in the AFC at midseason by fumbling away a Bills game to the Vikings on Sunday.

We’re pretty sure no one was running a long con, but we also wouldn’t put it past Mitch Morse and the Kansas City Chiefs knowing how successful they’ve been since Andy Reid first arrived as head coach back in 2013. And in case all of this sounds crazy, just know that you really need to go back and watch the end of the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings game in Week 10 to make sense of things.

We’re not going to leave you in the cold like that, however. Let’s try to help by setting the scene.

The Chiefs beat the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier on Sunday to move to 7-2 overall, giving them the best record in the AFC at the time. However, the Buffalo Bills were 6-2 heading into their game against Minnesota, and in the event of a tie, Buffalo holds the edge thanks to their head-to-head victory over the Chiefs from a month ago.

Just when it looked like the Bills were going to hold off the Vikings, Kirk Cousins and company came charging down the field. What follows is an exchange that will be remembered by both fan bases for as long as American football remains a viable product and the ending itself was about as crazy as anything you’ve ever seen.;

First, the Vikes kept their hopes alive thanks to a catch by Justin Jefferson that could be considered among the best in NFL history. We need to show it here just because we want to watch it again, too.

From there, the Vikings went all the way to the goal line but somehow failed to score. In fact, they had two attempts on fourth down to punch it in (thanks to a penalty on Buffalo) and failed. Following their strong defensive stand, the Bills came into their own end zone to put the game away since they held a four-point lead with less than one minute left on the clock. And that’s when the fumble happened, the sort of miscue that will hang over a player for years to come.

Just like that, the Vikes jumped on the ball, claimed a touchdown, and went up 27-23. It was a costly error by Morse, the Bills center, if you look from that franchise’s perspective, but let’s not forget that Morse was a second-round pick of the Chiefs under John Dorsey. Morse was a strong anchor in the heart of the Chiefs’ offensive line for four years before taking big money from Buffalo in free agency before the 2019 season.

Miraculously the Bills roared back to tie in on a field goal to force overtime but it wasn’t enough because the Vikings were finally able to put the Bills away in the extra session thanks to an interception by Patrick Peterson.

It’s possible that Morse is completing some sort of long con against the Bills. Or maybe a mistake just happened and the Chiefs happened to profit. But at this point, the Chiefs are now in full control of their own destiny with a one-game lead in the entire conference over the Bills thanks to a costly error from a familiar face.

Editorial note: It needs to be said that Morse is also one of the best centers playing the game today and there’s a reason the Bills are paying him so handsomely. We just could not help ourselves here given the good news for K.C.
