Let’s check in on the latest of a couple of former Kansas City Chiefs players as things change for them in the NFL preseason.

The NFL’s transaction wire on Sunday featured a couple of familiar faces for those who pay close enough attention to members of past iterations of the Kansas City Chiefs roster. For one player, interior offensive lineman Darryl Williams, it featured the good news of finding a new team. For another, tight end David Wells, it meant seeing his name on the list of released players once again.

Williams first joined the Chiefs as a rookie free agent back in the 2020 season after going undrafted after years as a starter for Mississippi State. From there, he lingered on the Chiefs’ practice squad and on larger offseason rosters but could never quite break through. He was ultimately released this offseason but found a quick home with the New England Patriots for a spell. Now he’s earned a new chance with the Jacksonville Jaguars, which might be the perfect space in which a young player can vie for real playing time on a burgeoning team.

Elsewhere, former Chiefs tight end David Wells will continue to take any and every opportunity that comes his way as he tries to find another place to compete before the ’22 season begins. Things looked positive with the Arizona Cardinals considering he’d held onto a spot since last fall with the team, but general manager Steve Keim released him over the weekend.

Wells was with the Chiefs’ practice squad during Patrick Mahomes’ first season as a starting quarterback in 2018 and earned a reserve/futures deal for the following offseason. However, he was released with an injury designation the next August before the ’19 season began. From there, Wells has found shorter stints with the New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, and Indianapolis Colts before landing in Arizona last year.
