The hiring carousel is in full motion for NFL franchises who are trying to decide on new leadership roles for their respective head coach and front office openings. So far, Kansas City Chiefs executive Ryan Poles is finding himself pulled in a couple of potential directions as teams seek a young general manager to change their team’s trajectory in terms of personnel.
The New York Giants were the first reported team with interest in Poles this offseason. Now, NFL reporter Field Yates has word that the Chicago Bears are interested, too.
Poles has been integral to the Chiefs roster construction over the years, as evidenced by his climb up the team’s organizational ladder—especially in the last handful of seasons.
Ryan Poles is earning interviews with multiple teams as a potential GM.
The Chiefs have employed Poles for 13 years and he’s only currently 36 years of age, which means Poles has basically been with one NFL team for his entire NFL career. Yet in that span, he’s transcended the stays of former Chiefs general managers like Scott Pioli and John Dorsey as he’s earned the trust of those above him over the course of time.
Poles was named the team’s director of college scouting in the same year that Brett Veach was promoted to GM and he is now serving as the team’s executive director of player personnel. Just last season, he earned his first-ever GM interview when the Carolina Panthers came calling (along with fellow Chiefs exec Brandt Tilis) before ultimately hiring Scott Fitterer away from the Seattle Seahawks.
The Giants have already finished their interview with Poles and they might want to act quickly if they want to secure Poles’ services before other teams get a chance to consider him as well. For now, the Bears have just made their interest known in interviewing him as they search for Ryan Pace’s replacement.
