The Kansas City Chiefs are a complete disaster right now

Let’s be honest here, even the wins haven’t been good. Yes, they survived a terrible start and some horrible defense against the Cleveland Browns and pulled out a win and their 42 points covered up another defensive meltdown against the Philadelphia Eagles, but we haven’t seen a single game this season that showed us a Super Bowl-caliber performance. Can they get it fixed in time to make a run this season? Sure, but the boat doesn’t need a slight corse correction it needs a couple of gigantic holes patched and all hands on deck to help scoop the water out.

In the first half of the game against the Bills I thought this rant would be primarily focused on the defense because they’ve been a flaming dumpster fire for most of the season so far. I will definitely get to them in a minute, but the rest of the team isn’t getting off the hook that easy. Yes, even the AMAZING Kansas City Chiefs offense is part of the problem.

You often hear coaches use the phrase “we played complementary football” as part of their cliché coach speak post-game press conferences. A lot of the time I don’t actually think that phrase means much, it’s just a way for coaches to say that the whole team played well. However, after watching the first five games of the season from this Chiefs team I truly believe that they might be playing the LEAST complimentary football I have ever seen. When the offense looks great, the defense couldn’t stop a high school JV team. When the defense makes some stops the offense shoots themselves in the foot with stupid penalties, unforced errors, and turnovers.

I’ve been depressed by bad Chiefs teams before, but this is a different kind of frustration. For years we HOPED the Chiefs were capable of being great and were let down. Now we KNOW this team is capable of Super Bowls and they just can’t get out of their own way. Even the great Patrick Mahomes hasn’t looked like himself. Yes, there are lots of touchdown passes, but he seems easily frustrated and it is leading to more mistakes than we’re used to seeing. The defense is clearly the worse of the two primary units, but the offense is not hitting their potential either.
