After signing two more free agents on Wednesday in wide receiver Chris Finke and safety Will Parks, the K.C. Chiefs have officially rounded out the 90-man offseason roster. Given that they are now so full, the Chiefs will have to release a player in order to make any subsequent additions, which signals that maybe they are finished with player acquisitions for the time being. However, Nate Taylor of the Athletic notes that the team isn’t quite done with the idea of bringing back cornerback Bashaud Breeland for another year.

The Chiefs allowed the entire 2021 NFL Draft to come and go without a single selection in the secondary, a surprising move given that both corner and safety were potential needs to address. At safety, the team could use another young project for the sake of competition and knowing Dan Sorensen could be finished after this year. As for cornerback, the Chiefs have a lot of young players with potential, yet each comes with a question or two. That means there’s room for one more player (preferably a veteran) who can help put the position over the top.

Bashaud Breeland has signed consecutive one-year deals with the Chiefs in recent years and perhaps he’s looking for a multi-year deal on the market and is willing to wait. Perhaps the Chiefs are waiting to hear about the progress of Deandre Baker coming back from a broken leg before making a move. It’s even possible the Chiefs want to see how young players like BoPete Keyes are coming along before assuming they need a veteran import. Either way, Breeland is still waiting as a free agent for someone to sign him, and from the outside looking in, a return to the Chiefs still makes a lot of sense.

Breeland has been an important part a Super Bowl worthy secondary in his tenure with the Chiefs so far as a super sticky corner with good instincts who is unafraid to be physical through the receiver’s entire route. There are occasional mistakes, including the flag here and there, but the Chiefs have to be very pleased overall with the returns on the short-term investments to date.

The Chiefs are still open to bringing back Bashaud Breeland.

At this point, the Chiefs roster is set with 90 players and perhaps the corners are ready to roll for next season from the coaches’ perspectives. That’s perfectly fair since there are a lot of talented young players already in the fold—including Baker, Keyes, L’Jarius Sneed, Charvarius Ward, Rashad Fenton, and more. But given the rigors of a full season and the concerns looming about durability for some players, a reunion with Breeland just makes too much sense at this stage.
