KC Chiefs expected to have interest in Le’Veon Bell

Per ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler, the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to have interest in free agent running back Le’Veon Bell.
According to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler, league sources are expecting the Kansas City Chiefs to do their homework and check in on free agent running back Le’Veon Bell’s interest in coming to play for their high-octane offense.
There’s already been plenty of smoke linking Bell as a possible signing for the Chiefs, but Fowler’s report cements at least some level of interest there. Of course, it doesn’t mean anything is imminent, nor does it remove any obstacles for either side.
Bell was allowed to hit free agency after the Jets released him on Tuesday. The team had placed him on the trading block, but his contract prohibited any team from making a legitimate offer there.
If Bell is already frustrated with the way he’s being used with the New York Jets, he might also not like the arrangement potentially waiting for him in Kansas City. Certainly he would enjoy playing for such creative minds like Andy Reid and Eric Bieniemy and alongside the level of talent enjoyed by the Chiefs in Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Travis Kelce and others.
However, the Chiefs would also be asking Bell to move past his own personal goals for the sake of something bigger—a move that sounds meaningful on paper but can get frustrating when the targets and touches aren’t coming his way. Bell would not be the lead back in Kansas City. At the very least, he’s sharing limited backfield touches with Clyde Edwards-Helaire and others like Darrel Williams will also get a rep from time to time.
For the Chiefs, the import of Bell is an interesting proposition, one that adds more star power to a team already loaded. It also provides some experience and obvious talent, along with the motivation of a player looking to show others what he can still do. However, Bell’s last two stops have ended dramatically and the team already made a major offseason investment in the position with Edwards-Helaire. Is there really room for a 1A like Bell?
If the pairing can pull off the tightrope walk and understand where each other is coming from, Bell could give the Chiefs another playmaker on a team already loaded with them. The Chiefs would also give him the best chance for a ring.
It makes sense for the Chiefs to give this some serious thought, but whether or not anything comes of all this smoke remains to be seen.
