5. Matt Moore

In Matt Moore we trust.

After Patrick Mahomes injured his knee during Week 7’s Thursday Night Football matchup with the Denver Broncos, Matt Moore was thrust into the starting quarterback position for two and a half weeks, finishing off the Broncos in Week 7 before playing NFC North powers like  the Green Bay Packers in Week 8 and the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9.

With an offense that was not designed for him and two games against teams that would play in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs, Moore should have fallen flat.

After a dominant defensive win in Denver, Matt Moore went toe to toe with Aaron Rodgers at Arrowhead, and despite losing by a touchdown, showed that he still has plenty left in the tank. Had it not been the efforts of Aaron Jones (or if Bashaud Breeland had not dropped an interception in the fourth quarter on GB’s 25 yard line), this may have been a win for Matt Moore.

But Moore really shined in Week 9, where he led Kansas City to a hard fought victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Harrison Butker‘s game winner may have officially secured the win, but it was Moore’s resilience and refusal to lose that put the Chiefs in the position to have Butker make that kick.

Moore was only on a one year deal with the Chiefs, having signed after Chad Henne was injured at the end of the preseason, meaning that he becomes a free agent come March. The Chiefs are unlikely to offer Moore a roster spot for next season, but then again, Henne is also a free agent, meaning the depth chart is bare after Mahomes.

Plenty of teams across the league need a reliable backup quarterback and Moore looked the part in his limited stint. Expect the Carolina Panthers and New York Jets.
