2020 mock draft: J.K. Dobbins, Kenneth Murray linked to Chiefs
By Matt Conner
J.K. Dobbins, RB, Ohio State
The stats:
With 301 carries, Dobbins crossed the 2,000 yard mark (by 3 yards) with 21 touchdowns on the ground in 2019.
They say:
"The Chiefs could use a bell-cow back in the Patrick Mahomes-led offense and Dobbins can undoubtedly be that featured back, as we’ve seen during his career at Ohio State."
We say:
Consider this a pipe dream if only it were 2021 or some other year. In a world where the Chiefs had no real concerns on the roster or emerging needs for major depth, taking Dobbins would make a lot of sense,
Let’s ge this out of the way: Dobbins is a great back and he would elevate the Chiefs running game the moment he stepped into the locker room. We all miss Kareem Hunt and the dynamism that comes with a star back versus relying on a committee that fails to create the same sort of mismatches as years past. Damien Williams is finally turning a corner again in 2019, but he averaged just over 2 yards per game for the first half of the season.
But back to the roster. The Chiefs have real holes in the secondary and the offensive interior. They could use some help at linebacker, and the same can be said of wide receiver if Sammy Watkins is let go. Offensive tackle looks horrible if anything happens to either starter (both of whom are now 29 or older) and defensive line is always a welcome investment.
Basically, running back in the first round is a luxury and the only teams who take such chances have nothing to show for it. (We’re looking at you Jaguars or Cowboys or Giants.) Give the Chiefs one full draft to address some weaknesses with another class and then we can discuss luxury picks.
