The Kansas City Chiefs march into Soldier Field to play Matt Nagy’s Chicago Bears team in a primetime game on Sunday night.

Heading into the 2019 regular season, the Chicago Bears resembled a Super Bowl contender on the rise, a dominant defense anchored by Khalil Mack matched with a promising young offense led by inventive head coach Matt Nagy. Together, the Bears looked poised to take control of the NFC North and make noise in the postseason.

In many preseason predictions, even Chiefs fans were taking a loss in Week 16 against the Bears. The respect for such an impressive defense along with the idea that Nagy was going to elevate the Bears offense to Chiefs-esque levels brought about the idea that facing the Patriots and Bears both in December would prove to be too much.

In short, during the preseason, more doubts existed about this particular game than maybe any other on the list—Patriots included.

If you accelerate to the present you realize that the Bears have holes where a team cannot have them—namely at quarterback. The defense is still stout, but the loss of former coordinator Vic Fangio has made them mortal again. The Bears offensive line is still a weakness against tough fronts, and David Montgomery never turned into the dynamic threat needed in the backfield. Then there’s Trubisky.

At this point, the Bears still have plenty of talent. They’ve also won three of their last four games. Nagy will want to show up strong late in the year in primetime, so there’s no reason to expect an easy win for the Chiefs. However, the Bears are not the juggernaut of an opponent they were once expected to be. This should be interesting.
