AFC West Preview: Oakland Raiders should be entertaining if nothing else
By Ellen Mathis
Season Outlook
So what can we expect for the Raiders this season? Well, I anticipate there will be drama – with an ego as big as the state they are leaving, Brown will provide endless stories that will no doubt detract from the actual season. Will he play? Will he try and paint helmets again? I’m sure there is a story I am not even thinking of that will come out as well. I can’t wait for the drama. It’s the only thing that is consistent with the Raiders.
Another thing to watch is Derek Carr. With the impending relocation to Las Vegas, is he truly the franchise quarterback? This, his sixth NFL season, is his chance to prove that he is.
The Chiefs play the Raiders in the second game of the season, September 15 in Oakland, and on December 1 in Kansas City. Will Brown be playing for the first game? How will the Chiefs defense look in the first game vs. the second? Will Mark Davis ever get a good haircut?
The Raiders have not shown an ability to be competitive in the AFC West for the last few years and I don’t see that changing. Despite the fact that they have added Antonio Brown and some rookies with potential, I don’t seem them competing for the AFC West crown.
If nothing else, we are sure to be in for an entertaining season off the field. Who knows if they can put it together on the field, but my guess is no. There are too many other good teams (Chiefs and Chargers) for them to be truly competitive, especially when they employ an average quarterback in Derek Carr. I anticipate a 5-11 season that is good for third in the AFC West.
