The Kansas City Chiefs announced a few roster moves late on Tuesday including the signing of a pair of defensive backs from FAU.

On Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs announced a flurry of roster moves intended to churn over the bottom of the 90-man roster as general manager Brett Veach attempts to find young talent and increase competition across the board heading into training camp.

The Chiefs announced they were releasing four players and signing four more, including running back Marcus Marshall from James Madison University in a move we’ve profiled here. Other players who signed with the Chiefs included another James Madison product in wideout Rashard Davis and a pair of defensive backs from Florida Atlantic University in Herb Miller and Andrew Soroh.

To make room on the roster, the Chiefs released former sixth round pick Leon McQuay, a versatile defensive back from USC, and a trio of rookies invited to minicamp last week: defensive back Dakari Monroe (San Jose State), wide receiver Jamire Jordan (Fresno State), wide receiver Andre Lindsey (Sacramento State).

Of the players who have left, three were short lived as roster hopefuls given a shot with the Chiefs after going undrafted in late April’s NFL Draft. McQuay should be a familiar face given how much he’s surfaced on the transaction wire over the years. He was drafted in 2017 then waived and placed on the practice squad for that season. The same thing happened twice last season and he inked a futures/reserve deal with the team in January. It’s possible that McQuay could return given his familiarity with the team, but it’s also possible the Chiefs now have the depth and youth to no longer need to call McQuay in a pinch.

As for the new faces, here’s a quick rundown of each:

  • Rashard Davis – Davis has ridden the same roster carousel as Leon McQuay with the Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders over the last two years. He was fortunate enough to earn a Super Bowl ring in 2017 as a member of Philly’s practice squad. The wideout is largely a special teams player who excelled in college at the same. His presence is likely about giving Dave Toub a look at his options as well as knowing who to call if S/T needs arise mid-season.
  • Herb Miller/Andrew Soroh – Soroh was a linebacker last year for FAU, but he’s got the size and skill set to settle in at safety at the pro level if he can make it. Fortunately both Miller and Soroh went from tryout players to earning their own contracts. Soroh had 54 tackles last year, 4.5 of them for a loss. He also has 3 career interceptions. Miller has 2 career interceptions to go with 14 passes defended in his FAU career. Miller also displayed solid special teams work at the college level.
