Running Back: Darrell Henderson – Memphis

If you asked me to name one offensive player that would be the most fun to see in a Chiefs uniform next season, hands down it is Darrell Henderson of Memphis. He’s a home run waiting to happen.

If you haven’t watched any clips of Henderson, you need to take five minutes and go to YouTube and watch some. It doesn’t even matter what you click on. If it’s a video of Henderson, it will include explosive long runs. The guy rushed for over 1,900 yards last season with 22 touchdowns and a mind boggling 8.9 yards per carry.

While Henderson’s time in the 40-yard dash wasn’t blazing (4.49 seconds), it isn’t his top speed that generates such long runs. He’s great about shaking off initial contact, and then, when he has just a little space to work with and he gets to the second level, his feet are fantastic. He dances around the linebacker or safety that is coming at him, and he’s off to the races.

The thought of putting him on a team where the defense has to put their primary focus on stopping Patrick Mahomes and the passing attack is enough to make him worth a second round pick in my mind. Plus, think about how Andy Reid likes to stretch a defense both vertically and sideline to sideline. That creates space for playmakers to work, and with that kind of space, Henderson would be lethal in Kansas City.

Runner Up: Darwin Thompson – Utah State

Darwin Thompson was this close to beating out Darrell Henderson for my top running back draft crush, but ultimately Henderson’s home run ability was a little too tempting to overcome. However, if the Chiefs don’t want to spend a draft pick early on a running back, Thompson is my clear favorite of the mid-round options.

Thompson is just 5-foot-8 and 200 pounds but is absolutely ripped (28 bench press reps). Obviously at his size, he can get swallowed up if a big guy gets him wrapped up properly, but that’s easier said than done as Thompson shows great balance and agility. In fact, Pro Football Focus graded him number one in this draft class in their “elusiveness rating”. You add to that the fact that he’s shown really good hands coming out of the back field and this guy would be an amazing mid-round pick for the Chiefs.
