Chiefs in the AAF, Week 7: De’Vante Bausby seals win with Pick 2
By Kody Latham
Big plays are exciting no matter the level of competition and this week the AAF was full of them along with its first overtime game.
Week 7 of the Alliance of American Football may have been the most exciting of the season. The Orlando Apollos clinched their playoff berth by going into Atlanta and annihilating them in a lopsided game that ended 36-6.
Former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Aaron Murray continued to struggle even though he completed over 70 percent of his passes. Murray threw for 135 yards and two interceptions in the loss which leaves the Legends in a difficult position to make the playoffs this season. There is still a small amount of hope Atlanta can make it, but they will have to win the rest of their games while hoping the Birmingham Iron will lose their remaining games.

The chances of this coming to pass are unlikely, but not totally out of the question. The game everyone wanted to see this past weekend though was not the Legends versus the Apollos. Instead, it was the Memphis Express versus the Iron that had people’s attention. Johnny Manziel was suiting up for his first game in the AAF for the Express, and it was must-see television for many people.
No one was left disappointed either, as Memphis and Birmingham went into the first overtime game in AAF history. The Iron started with the ball and the Express was able to stop them from scoring any points on the possession. Memphis scored a touchdown two plays later coming away with the win.
It was also a good week for a few former Chiefs, one of whom was able to come away with the elusive ‘Pick 2’. Here’s our weekly review of former Chiefs player who are excelling in the newest football league.
De’Vante Bausby, CB, San Antonio Commanders
We have talked a lot about De’Vante Bausby as the weeks have gone by this season. The San Antonio Commanders defense is arguably the best in the league, and they are led by Bausby who is currently the league leader in interceptions with five. He also came up big in this week’s game when the Salt Lake Stallions were attempting to tie the game with under two minutes left.

This play is one of the rarest in football. It has only been done once at the NFL level by former Kansas City safety Eric Berry. To do it in that situation to secure the win was a lot of fun to watch. Things are looking up for Bausby who should have no problem finding suitors in the NFL if he should decide to rejoin the league.
Andrew Tiller, OG, Orlando Apollos
Andrew Tiller played very well in the blowout win against the Atlanta Legends. Tiller spent a brief time with Kansas City back in 2017, but was released before the season started and bounced around a bit before ending up playing for the Orlando Apollos. Since then he has made Pro Football Focus’s ”Team of The Week” twice now. Tiller had a great game in pass protection, which has always been his strength, but continued to struggle in the run game. Tiller will get another shot to make the list this week as the Apollos take on the Memphis Express.
Akeem Hunt, RB, Orlando Apollos
We have not visited Akeem Hunt since the first week of the season. Since then the Apollos have been heavily using a running back by committee approach. The Apollos, as a team, have close to 1,000 rushing yards. However, team rushing leader D’Ernest Johnson only has 348 yards by himself.
Hunt currently has 164 rushing yards and 49 receiving yards this season. He’s been the third running back for a few weeks now, but still sees plenty of action during games. This past week he had nine carries for 39 yards, and two catches for 14 yards. Hunt should be looking forward to facing the Express this week as a chance to see the field even more in what should be another blowout.
