Bashaud Breeland signs 1-year deal with Kansas City Chiefs
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs have signed Bashaud Breeland to a one-year deal in a move that strengthens the cornerback spot in multiple ways.
The Kansas City Chiefs have finally bolstered the cornerback position via free agency, perhaps the most problematic spot on the roster, with news that they’ve signed free agent Bashaud Breeland to a one-year deal.
ESPN reporter Rob Demovsky was the first to report the news that the former Washington Redskins cornerback had signed with the Chiefs. Ian Rapoport has word of the terms that it’s a single year worth up to $5 million in incentives.

The Chiefs spent quite a bit of time with Breeland last season on a mid-season free agent visit that ultimately led to his signing with the Green Bay Packers. In a limited stint up north, Breeland had 20 total tackles, 4 passes defended and 2 interceptions with the Packers.
Breeland, who just turned 27 this winter, gives the Chiefs another option in the secondary who can start outside—a much needed asset for a team with very few bodies to even compete at the position. Kendall Fuller profiles best as a slot corner but he’s the surest thing on a roster that lost Steven Nelson to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Orlando Scandrick is also a free agent.
Tremon Smith and Charvarius Ward are the young holdovers on the roster, but Smith is best known as a returner while Ward looked solid late in the season in limited work. The Chiefs are also likely to sign another free agent and/or address the position in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Breeland has 10 career interceptions in five NFL seasons after entering the NFL as the fourth round pick of the Redskins in the 2014 NFL Draft.
