Jason Verrett is going on an extensive free agent tour as he is reportedly set to check out the 49ers, the Texans, and the Chiefs in coming days.

Even with Wednesday’s visit of Ronald Darby, the Kansas City Chiefs are set to host another free agent cornerback with the news that Jason Verrett is scheduled to come to K.C.

Reporter Aaron Wilson posted on Wednesday that Verrett is supposed to spend time with the San Francisco 49ers before joining the Houston Texans and finally the Chiefs in a free agent tour. Of course, it’s uncertain whether he’s committed to visiting each team first before making a decision or whether the Niners and/or Texans will make it more difficult by trying to force him to take an offer early.

Verrett is familiar to Chiefs fans as a longtime cornerback for the San Diego and then Los Angeles Chargers. The former first-round pick is a dynamic talent and, when healthy, has risen to his draft status. Unfortunately, those seasons are rare as Verrett seems cursed at times, unable to remain on the field for any real length of time.

Verrett missed all of last season with a torn Achilles tendon and he only played a single game the previous season with a knee injury as well. A partially torn ACL took out the season before that after only four games, and he was also limited to four games in 2014—his rookie campaign—due to a torn rotator cuff among other things.

Over the last five seasons, Verrett has averaged only five games per year, starting a total of 23 games for the Chargers in that time. Yet he made the Pro Bowl in his only year in which he was healthy, a 14-game season in 2015 in which he showed he can be a lockdown corner even at the NFL level.

Despite the injury history, Verrett’s ceiling will likely give him another chance (and more) with a new team, who will only hope he can put his woes behind him.
