GLENDALE, AZ - DECEMBER 24: Free safety Tyrann Mathieu

It’s clear that fans and players both are very excited about the Kansas City Chiefs’ signing of Tyrann Mathieu to a contract in free agency.

The verdict came as quickly as the news could be announced. The moment the Kansas City Chiefs leaked word that they had signed Tyrann Mathieu to a deal in free agency, the response from analysts, fans, and even Chiefs players was overwhelmingly positive, as everyone was excited to add the free agent safety.

Mathieu reportedly will sign a three-year deal worth $42 million once the new league year begins and such deals can be made official on Wednesday. Mathieu will step into a safety position that could use both depth and high-end talent. It’s easy to assume Mathieu will start in place of Ron Parker at the free safety spot, but he’s highly versatile and should be able to give Steve Spagnuolo some options on the defensive side.

Mathieu spent last season with the Houston Texans after beginning his career with the Arizona Cardinals. He signed a $7 million deal for a single year last offseason as a prove-it sort of role with the Texans after dealing with injury concerns in previous years. He’s now started 32 consecutive games and has largely put away any durability concerns.

Mathieu is also still only 26-years-old and should give the Chiefs a prime performer in the secondary. It’s the reason why fans and teammates were so excited. It starts with the reigning league MVP himself, starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who seemed excited to add the man they call “the Honey Badger.”
