Patrick Mahomes spoke with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America on Friday and said he was not worried at all about his future contract extension when asked.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes knows the money will come in time. Just as when he eschewed potential sponsorships as a rookie in 2017 for the sake of staying out of the spotlight, Mahomes once again provided an interviewer with the right answer when asked about the rumors he could sign a $200 million contract as early as next spring.

Michael Strahan was the one asking questions on Friday to Mahomes, who cut in remotely for an interview from Atlanta as he participates in various NFL activities during Super Bowl festivities. Strahan asked a number of questions about his incredible season, his meeting with Tom Brady after the loss to the New England Patriots, and finally about the rumors of a potentially lucrative extension that he will be in line for after the 2019 regular season.

At this point, any player with any media savvy whatsoever will know to deflect that answer and that’s exactly what Mahomes did here.

"“We’re still a long ways away. I still have a full year. I’m trying to do whatever I can to be in the Super Bowl next year. If I go out there and be myself, play with these teammates I have around me, stuff like that will handle itself.”"

While it’s obvious that no player is going to answer that with some sort of, “To be honest, I can’t wait to force the market to pay me the most money possible,” it’s also true that Mahomes has been a team-first presence ever since he arrived via trade in Kansas City. He was more than just a willing participant in the Chiefs’ plan to slowly hand him the starting role. He was a consummate professional sitting behind Alex Smith for last year and led this year with the same charisma and character mix that made him an instant fan favorite.

Mahomes knows that the money will be there if he can keep his mind focused on the right things, and he’s right in that regard. But what will also remain is the love from the fans and the trust of teammates that even after the money is in hand, he’ll still be the same quarterback who captured a city in the first place.
