Patrick Mahomes is the youngest winner in the history of the award by two months over Dan Marino, who won in 1984.

If the wave of awards and honors coming to Patrick Mahomes lately are any indication, the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs is likely to walk away with the biggest of all—the Most Valuable Player award for the NFL’s 2018 season.

On Tuesday, Sporting News announced that, in a vote of players, Mahomes had been honored with Offensive Player of the Year for 2018. It’s a meaningful award given that his peers had the input, and it shows that NFL fans and media aren’t the only ones enamored with Mahomes’s rare talents under center.

Mahomes is going to need some more shelf space in his home as he heads further toward the offseason. He was also named to the Pro Bowl as well as first-team All-Pro by the Associated Press, the Pro Football Writers Association, and Pro Football Focus. They are all the well-deserved awards given to a man who set numerous records in his first full season as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Mahomes is only the second person to ever have 50 touchdown passes and 5,000 passing yards in a single season. The fact that he did it his first year with the responsibility is not only a testament to his natural playing ability, which everyone raved about coming into the league, but his intelligence and work ethic to handle the mental load that comes with success in the NFL as a quarterback.

Mahomes and the Chiefs are preparing for Sunday evening’s game against the New England Patriots, a showdown for AFC supremacy that will give the winners a spot in Super Bowl LIII. For Mahomes, he’s likely to tell you that the Lombardi is the trophy that matters most. Here’s hoping he adds that one to his collection, too.
