The Chicago Bears have released quarterback Tyler Bray, which brings up questions of whether his six year NFL career might be over.

The Chicago Bears had to make room for returning offensive lineman Kyle Long from injured reserve on Saturday as they prepare for not only Week 17 but a hopeful playoff run. Unfortunately, that also means someone had to go from the active roster, and Adam Schefter is reporting that player is former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Tyler Bray.

The Bears are quite excited to add Long back to the offensive front heading into their game against the Minnesota Vikings to close the season. Long is certainly a nice upgrade for Matt Nagy’s offense, especially as Mitch Trubisky continues to grow into the franchise face he was drafted to be.

For Bray, it will be interesting to see whether or not he’s able to find meaningful work from this point forward. He’s already beaten the odds to stay employed for as long as he has in the NFL given that he was originally signed by the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent back in 2013.

With the Chiefs, Bray lasted five full seasons as the team’s third-string quarterback behind Alex Smith and a myriad of second-string players. Bray remained the team’s developmental option and beat out drafted rookies like Aaron Murray from Georgia and Kevin Hogan from Stanford over the years.

This year, Bray left with former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy to join the Bears as a free agent signing. Bray has been in the quarterback room with Trubisky throughout the season as a player able to help translate Nagy’s offense to the position.

Bray has played in only one NFL game in his career and even that was a very short stint in Week 17 against the Denver Broncos during Patrick Mahomes’ first career start. Andy Reid attempted to give Bray a chance to play but a fumble put the game in jeopardy before Mahomes came back in to help seal the win on the road.

Even after six years in the league, Bray is only 27 years old.
