The Kansas City Chiefs are in prime position to win the AFC West for a third straight season, despite rumblings from some fans and critics alike.

Before the season began, the majority of mainstream sports media predicted the Kansas City Chiefs would miss the playoffs and become buried within the AFC West. Even with the preseason hype of Patrick Mahomes and the weapons on offense, an 8-8 season would have been considered a success.

With two games remaining on the 2018 season, these Chiefs have exceeded expectations of even the most optimistic fan or expert projections.

Mahomes has all but wrapped up the MVP, which would be a first for Kansas City. The Chiefs are one win away from securing the No.1 seed and winning a third straight division title.

They’ve gotten here with a banged up offensive line, the absence of Eric Berry, the Kareem Hunt debacle, and a dismal year-long performance by the defense, minus the defensive line.

Yet, with all those imperfections, these Chiefs continue to win games. Currently sitting at 11-3, the Chiefs have been a consistent power within a season full of inconsistencies.

The Los Angeles Rams were considered the favorites to win the Super Bowl just a month ago. Recently, they look nothing more than a good team with problems. Their offense has stumbled a bit and the defense hasn’t come up big when needed. The last two weeks have been defeats for a team that once looked dominant—a road loss to the Chicago Bears followed by a 7-point home loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The New Orleans Saints had their own miracle season take a turn for the worst. Although their record is best in the league with only two losses, they have failed to score 13 points in two out of the last three games.

The Chiefs have been consistent all year long. The defense is horrid, as expected. The offense has been dominant. Week in and week out this young Chiefs team keeps putting out the same product.

Kansas City hasn’t scored fewer than 26 points all season. They have lost three games this season by a total of seven points—meaning they’ve been competitive down to the last second in every game, consistently competing week in and week out.

It didn’t take long for the passionate fan base to forget the so-called dull years of Alex Smith football. It didn’t take long for fans to forget the history-making accomplishments this team has made or will make by seasons end. We have all grown used to a quarterback throwing for 300 yards each week. We have grown used to being in every single game we play.

Despite our defense and the man that runs it, Bob Sutton, completely dropping the ball, your Kansas City Chiefs are on the verge of making history. With a win on Sunday night, the Chiefs can clinch a first-round bye. With a little help, they can clinch the No. 1 seed against Seattle.

That last paragraph shouldn’t be skimmed over without the reader taking notice. Yes, our secondary will make a bald man grow hair just so he can pull it out. The easy win may not be in the Chiefs’ repertoire in 2018, but they aren’t far away from making such a claim.
