The Kansas City Chiefs have finished above .500 for six straight seasons now, which is the third best and a couple of years away from the franchise record.

In addition to a franchise record-breaking day for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs accomplished something as a team for the sixth consecutive year after Sunday’s 26-14 win against the Arizona Cardinals.

For the sixth straight season, the Chiefs have a record above .500. This is a trend that started in 2013 when the Chiefs finished 11-5 after a 9-0 start. Despite falling short of making the playoffs in 2014, the Chiefs finished with a 9-7 record. The Chiefs were 11-5 once again in 2015, coming after a 1-5 start. Their best record during this stretch came in 2016 when the Chiefs finished 12-4 while winning the AFC West. The Chiefs remained on top of the AFC West in back-to-back seasons for the first time in franchise history last year. The Chiefs concluded the year with a 10-6 record.

The Chiefs now own a 9-1 record with six games to go. Currently on top of the division and conference, the Chiefs are on pace to finish with the best record they’ve had during this six-year stretch.

This six-year streak is the third-best in franchise history, trailing a pair of nine-year stretches where the Chiefs finished above .500.

The first nine-year streak started in 1965, all the way through 1973. It includes the two seasons where the Chiefs appeared in the Super Bowl during the 1966 and 1969 seasons. The Chiefs made the playoffs four times during those nine seasons.

Another nine-year streak kicked off in 1989 through 1997. The Chiefs made the playoffs seven times during that stretch, six of them consecutively from 1990 to 1995.

One thing you may notice with all three of these streaks, all of them have happened under the same head coach throughout the duration of their respective streaks. Hank Stram was the head coach during Kansas City’s first nine-year stretch while Marty Schottenheimer was under the helm the second time the Chiefs finished above .500 for nine consecutive seasons.

In the last six seasons the Chiefs have finished above .500, the Chiefs have done it all under Andy Reid’s guidance.

In fact, something Reid and Schottenheimer have in common is that they got the Chiefs to finish above .500 in their first seasons as the head coach of the Chiefs. As noted before, Schottenheimer’s streak lasted nine years while Reid’s is still active in six seasons.
