Move over, Len Dawson. Patrick Mahomes has set the new record for touchdown passes in a season for the Kansas City Chiefs with his 31st of the season.

The Kansas City Chiefs now have a new franchise record for most touchdown passes in a single season and it comes with more than six games left on the schedule. With well over one half left in Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, Patrick Mahomes broke Len Dawson’s 54-year-old franchise record by completing his 31st touchdown pass of the season.

Mahomes broke the record in the second quarter with a short pass to Tyreek Hill. Earlier in the game, he tied the record within the first minute overall with a deep pass to Tyreek Hill that went for the game’s first score on the opening drive—a typical phenomenon with this potent Chiefs offense.

Mahomes has had the record in his sights since he started the season so strong and it was clear that he would rack up touchdown passes by the dozens before this year was said and done. It’s not only an incredible season accomplishment for Mahomes in his first year as a starting quarterback in the NFL but it’s even more amazing when you realize the Chiefs still have six regular-season games left for Mahomes to further his record.

In nine full games this year, Mahomes has thrown less than three touchdowns on only two occasions: Week 4 against the Denver Broncos and Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Yet in those same games, Mahomes picked up his only two rushing touchdowns of the year, showing that he can be an asset in the ground game with a smart run if the passing game is limited in the end zone.

Where Mahomes’ final stat line will land remains to be seen, but it’s clear that a historic season will only look more impressive with six more games to go. Franchise records might not be the only marks that are changed when all is said and done for Mahomes in 2018.
