Grading Offensive Line Play

Despite the injuries along the offensive line and the lack of production in the running game in weeks past, the offensive line looked good in this area against Cleveland. Kansas City wasn’t even trying to use any tricks to confuse the defense either. Almost the entire running attack went to the right side of the offensive line. I counted 74 yards of Kareem’s 91 yard total on the ground went to the right side of the center.

What’s even more outstanding about this stat is the fact that it’s the right side of the interior line that has injuries. With Mitch Morse still out, center Austin Reiter who spent the last couple of years with the Browns had his second start of the season. In the absence of right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, the Chiefs have been deploying Andrew Wylie who has looked good at the position this season.

The Chiefs purposely ran away from star defensive star Miles Garrett who did cause some issues on the left side of the offensive line on Sunday, but for the most part, was held in check. Left guard Cam Erving and left tackle, Eric Fisher, each allowed a couple of pressures and a sack apiece. Given the talent they were going up against in the 2017 first overall draft pick, that’s still not that bad.

Much like in the running game, the right side of the line was outstanding for the most part in the passing game as well. Reiter, Wylie, and right tackle Mitchell Schwartz all combined for a total of zero pressures on the day. While Wylie and Reiter looked good last week against the Denver Broncos as well, they both looked even better against Cleveland. Schwartz continues to be one of the most underrated offensive linemen, in my opinion.
